TOMS helps haiti

January 20th, 2010 by admin

Partners in Health has been working in Haiti for more than 20 years and are deeply committed to the betterment of Haiti. They made a “mega-commitment” in 2008 at the annual Clinton Global Initiative conference to expand efforts in Haiti after the country was devastated by an aggressive hurricane season in 2008. Blake was blown away by their passion and determination to improve Haiti, and TOMS, alongside Procter and Gamble, Good Energies Foundation, Digicel, Wyclef Jean, Matt Damon and Frank McKenna of the One by One Foundation, and the government of Haiti, joined the 2008 commitment by sending 30,000 pairs of shoes.

We have since fostered a wonderful relationship with Partners in Health and when news of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti reached LA- we immediately reached out and asked how TOMS could help.

The first 48 hours are critical for decisive action in any disaster relief effort; so TOMS donated $5 for every purchase of a One for One item from the TOMS website within a 2-day period. The support of the TOMS community was amazing, and thanks to their action, TOMS is able to make a solid donation to PIH. This support is in addition to our promise to send thousands of pairs of shoes to children in need in Haiti.

We’re checking in on their Twitter account and website everyday for updates from the ground. Our hearts go out to all the people of Haiti, the friends and families of those who have been affected, and the incredibly inspirational doctors and volunteers who are working tirelessly to save lives.

In an email this afternoon from PIH they said,

“Emergency medical care, especially surgical care and trauma management, continues to be our top priority. As of this morning, PIH and our partners are running 15 functional operating rooms throughout Haiti, both at PIH’s existing facilities outside of Port-au-Prince and within the city, including at our newly identified base of operations just outside Port-au-Prince called Croix des Bouquets.  A group of volunteers from Operation Smile have arrived in Croix des Bouquets this afternoon to perform surgeries and provide post-operative care.   PIH continues to coordinate the efforts of the many NGOs working to restore medical functions at HUEH, the general hospital in Port-au-Prince, and our rural hospitals and health centers in the Central Plateau and the Artibonite are still receiving busloads of patients fleeing the city. All of our 450 inpatient beds are full, and there are still thousands of patients awaiting treatment.
In addition to medical personnel, PH is also mobilizing other key professionals into Haiti to help deal with the earthquake’s aftermath. Teams of structural engineers, who have worked with us before and have extensive experience in Haiti, will be evaluating the structural damage done to buildings and will help PIH to strategize for the long-term job of rebuilding in the months and years to come.  PIH has also secured a 30,000 square foot staging area at Miami International Airport, where we can now load large cargo planes with supplies and equipment bound for Haiti. ”
