…and the award for having the greatest week on tour of all time goes to TEAM SOUTHEAST. Goodness gracious, this has been one for the record books, somethin’ to call home about, you might even shake a stick at it.
Our week began on King Street in Charleston, SC where fresh pralines and old friends are sure to be found. With friends Allison and Peter in tow, we enjoyed delicious local fare and dessert that was “good enough to make you wanna slap your granny.” (Sidenote: readers, please do not begin the practice of slapping your grandmothers…except in the case of remarkably tasty treats).
“What’ll ya have!” Yep, that’s right, we were tourists for a day. We found lunch at the largest drive-in fast food restaurant in the world…The Varsity. The city of Atlanta continued to feed us well, as we washed our hands well and enjoyed Ethiopian food (sans utensils) with our friends Chad and Candy. The next morning we devoured breakfast at the alleged “Original House of Pancakes” where we met up with the Invisible Children Deep South roadie team. Hours later we found ourselves walking the streets of downtown ATL where we were stopped and recognized by a fan. No need to adjust your glasses, you read correctly… A FAN. Apparently we’re kind of a big deal, but I have it on good authority that celebrities do not live in 15 passenger vans. (Our van, by the way, has been appropriately named Etta James in remembrance of our tattered dreams to have beignets and see Etta James in the flesh.)

Continuing to follow great food through the state of Georgia, we made a stop in Athens. Our incredible campus rep, Rene and her roommate Kristy took us on a fantastic Tour de Athens which included a fabulous and extensive breakfast at Mama’s Boy. Should you ever find yourself in this black and red college town, do not leave without stopping for biscuits and peach french toast–you’ll never forget it.
Good friends are such a valuable gift, and in that way–our lives have been so rich on this tour. My wonderful friend Carolyn hosted an event for us in Clemson, SC that turned out to be the best event we’ve ever had. The atmosphere was perfect, the music was amazing, and the people were absolutely inspiring. It was hard to leave and say goodbye, but leave we did…and for unimaginable adventure.
I spent the two hours following our departure driving 20mph through what seemed like 60 miles of U-turns. apparently, this experience can also be called “driving a giant van through the Appalachian Mountains.” Vehicular distress aside, we stumbled upon a field of mini-horses. they are horrifying and short and furry…and all things considered, I think I might have nightmares for the rest of my life.
