I’ll be honest, I resisted Twitter at first too. But with so much going on at TOMS- so many Shoe Drop moments to share, photos to post, insights to reveal- it was clear a Twitter account would be a fun way to connect with thousands of people around the world. Couldn’t have imagined that the TOMS following would grow to over 300,000 by the end of 2009 though… but here we are. TOMS is having conversations with followers daily, we’re posting when new styles are available, we’re uploading photos from HQ, and people are talking about TOMS and sharing the story, all in 140 characters or less.

In celebration of 300,000 awesome people who are listening to TOMS tweets, we had to include a Top 10 list of our favorite 140-character mesages from the past 365 days.

10. We always knew TOMS were good for dancing…

9. Even the young ones can spot good style!

8. We saw a lot of these in April and May, and it put smiles on our faces every time.

7. I spot TOMS….

6. Love at first sight.

5. In reference to a TOMS piece on CBS.

4. Good friend of TOMS, Kevin Rose, rocks a new pair of TOMS.

3. I got a phone call in the middle of the night about this one, “Guess. Who. Just. Tweeted. About. TOMS…”

2. One for One was represented on many couple’s special days in ‘09. Such a beautiful thing…

1. Live coverage via twitpics from Element at the October Shoe + Board Drop in Durban, South Africa.

But we’re still accepting honorable mentions… If TOMS has impacted your life this year or you have a 140-character story that will make us laugh, jump over to Twitter and post @TOMSshoes.

Happy almost New Year- be safe tonight!

When Fall hits, you know its time for one of the premier festivals in the country: Austin City Limits. Texas is filled TOMS supporters, especially when ACL comes around. Being able to have a booth where we can interact over 80,000 people every day is just an amazing opportunity. Some are new, as we excitedly share the One for One movement and help outfit them in their first pair of TOMS, and some festival-goers return year after year to the TOMS booth wearing their TOMS just to say hello. This year, we have a sales rep, a VP of sales, a couple interns, a past-Vagabond, and UT campus reps out to man the booth in our 3rd year selling at the festival. TOMS will have women’s black canvas, red canvas, ash canvas, white canvas, and burlap styles; and men’s black canvas, ask canvas, black burlap, and beige Stitchout styles available- get ‘em while they last (or head over to TOMSshoes.com if your style sells out). ACL provides the perfect outlet to associate TOMS with great music and interact awesome people. If you make it out, drop by the TOMS booth, open all 3 days 11:00am – 10:00pm and say hi!

And if you’re on Twitter, send twitpics when you spot people wearing TOMS (@TOMSshoes) so the rest of us here at HQ can be envious of how much fun you all are having.

TOMS teamed up with Cali-based action sports retailer Active and up-and-coming non-profit Krochet Kids to create an energetic atmosphere, which featured a slew diverse live music, live murals, and 13 artists custom painting TOMS for customers. “We had over 1,500 people there!” said Retail Marketing Manager Garret Awad. “This event was by far the biggest event we have done with Active.”

TOMS: How did you first hear of TOMS?
LUCID: I first heard about TOMS from a sales rep. I was actually looking for another particular brand of shoes and found the rep for them. It turned out that brand was not available in my area as another store already carried them. The sales rep suggested TOMS instead. The universe was conspiring in my favour that day!

T: What are your favorite TOMS you currently carry?
L: Personally, I wear the Stitchouts most often! Its the Wrap Boot that I think is pretty genius though…but they don’t make them in my size!

T: You recently went on a shoe drop. Tell us a little about your experience and how it affected you?
L: Wow…gotta a few hours? In December, I went on a shoe drop in Misiones in Argentina near the Iguazu Falls. I met with 12 amazing people from the US, Canada and Australia. We travelled to different schools in that area and distributed shoes to kids. We spent about an hour or more fitting individual kids with shoes. Then afterwards, we would have free time with our new friends playing, kicking a soccer ball around and for the most part hamming it up. There was a bit of a language barrier (especially for me) but that didn’t seem to matter as laughing is pretty universal. Seeing first hand the different conditions that other people live in was very humbling. The things that we take for granted every day became very apparent. The “problems” that I perceived myself to have everyday seemed petty compared to what some of the people I met have to deal with. Even more humbling was how happy these people were living in what we in North America would consider poverty. This further instilled my belief that money, though a provider of comfort and luxury, is not the source of happiness!

T: What was the inspiration behind your window display?
L: Another brand I carry, Sitka, provided a “wallpaper” that is west coast forest scene. It was actually from a photo taken by one of Sitka’s owners, Andrew Paine. In the photo of the display you can see it in the background. The display window extends around to the left and the theme continues with Sitka clothing on bust forms mounted on larger log rounds. I feel very fortunate to live in a naturally beautiful portion of the planet. This display is a reflection of that appreciation and respect that I have for Mother Nature. I must admit, cutting a tree out of the woods for the display seems to be a bit contradictory though.

T: Anything else our readers should know about Lucid?
L: Lucid is not unlike any independently owned clothing store in any other town. Maybe that’s a board store, maybe a more fashion boutique, perhaps its a retailer of eco friendly products (we are little bit of each of those). The goal with these businesses is to offer something different and unique to the people in that particular area. Also, to support the local culture, be it surfing, skating, arts, music or whatever the local scene is. Support your friendly neighbour store…we appreciate it! If you’d like to keep up with all things Lucid, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, or our website.

(OK… maybe its a stretch… but we can dream)

A note from our office manager, Travis, in response to our amazing turn out this past weekend for our 2-day sample sale:

Hello Friends!
The sample sale was unbelievable this past weekend!

We sold over 2,000 items (including t-shirts and hoodies) which means 2,000+ children will receive shoes from our efforts! A BIG thanks to the Interns and Vagabonds that worked the sale and helped get our office ready. There were hundreds of people who turned up for the sale; even a queue out the door for a majority of each day. Our Online Marketing team did an amazing job of getting the word out and creating a buzz about the sale – based on a survey of 68 people conducted during the sale, well over half of them (40) heard about it from either Facebook, Twitter or blogs! Also, a special thanks to those of you who stayed late on Friday night to unpack a fresh batch of samples for the Saturday portion of the sale! (I feel like this is the Grammy’s or something… so many people to thank! ha)

What a fantastic example of our staff rallying together to pull off a great event.

Again, THANK YOU!

T

We couldn’t be more excited that as a result of this sale, 2,000 more individuals will be out wearing their TOMS everyday, sharing the story, helping us to scale this One for One movement, and in turn provide more shoes to children in need. If you made it out this weekend, we want to know what shoes you bought, what shoes you were hoping to buy, and how you heard about it! Send us photos of you in your new kicks!

Most of us here at TOMS have signed up for Google Alerts to keep us updated on the most recent mentions of TOMS, Blake, or One for One. This past week, a really amazing one came through from WIRED. Seth Godin (whom Blake referred to as his “business thinking hero for the past 10 years,” on Twitter) uses Blake Mycoskie, our founder and Chief Shoe Giver, and President Barack Obama as individuals who are “finding and connecting like-minded people and leading them to a place they want to go.” Pretty incredible to be used as an example next to Obama, don’t you think??

As we revved up for the Holiday season, Blake (founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes) proposed a huge goal: “Lets reach 30,000 pairs of shoes in 30 days, to allow us to GIVE 30,000 pairs of shoes to children in Ethiopia.” After he announced the news, we all scurried back to our desks with big eyes and busy hands, and started drafting ideas: We have to send a link to everyone we know, We’ll each change our e-mail signature and voice mail to promote 30k in 30 days, We have to reach out to the most powerful people in our address books… The next weeks were spent preparing banners and share pages, Facebook Events and a stellar Holiday video, and finally the campaign launched on November 20th. The 30k in 30 days video, created by our friends at BORN Inc., was stamped on our homepage, our YouTube Channel, our Facebook Pages, and our blogs… the viral expansion began. In just over two weeks, the video had over 35,000 views. Its been embedded on countless blogs, video sites, and social media outlets: some our own efforts, others by fans and friends of TOMS. And we were seeing the results: the ShoeMeter on our homepage passed 9k… passed 15k… inched closer and closer to 30,000. We ran contests, tweeted, and changed our iChat icons to keep the momentum going, and now with 3 days left in the campaign, we are in sprint mode.
Seeing so many individuals come together towards one goal, is truly a blessing during the Holiday season. WE are making an impact. WE are creating the change we wish to see in the world. Your support thus far has been exceptional. You’ve blown us away, really. Now in these last few days of our campaign- lets make that final push. Post our link one last time, forward the video that friend of a friend, invite your sister’s boyfriend’s aunt to our Facebook Event… tell them that our meter is rising to 24k tonight, but that isn’t quite the finish line.
And lastly, THANK YOU for not only wanting to see change in this world, but for being part of the movement that is making it happen.

Happy Holidays… let’s sprint.
