The past few days have been a little weird without our third teammate, Tim, around. He left the Vagabond Tour a week early to jump on board the Ten Out of Tenn tour, a two-week-long tour featuring 10 musicians out of Nashville, TN. He’ll be selling TOMS at the shows and helping out with other aspects regarding the tour. After some unexpected transmission issues, Michelle and I are up and running again with the Vaga-Van. We had one of our best events of the tour at a church (which was held in a museum) in Columbia, SC Sunday night, selling 142 pairs of shoes!! They were doing a series on giving and at the end of each of the three services, the pastor invited the people to take the shoes off of their feet and bring them to a pile in the front, which would be donated to homeless shelters in the city. He then talked about TOMS and announced that we would be in a designated area following the services, where they would have the opportunity to buy a new pair of shoes, and in turn, give a second pair of shoes away. Approximately 600 people donated the shoes off of their feet to their own community before even finding out that we were outside selling shoes, which was awesome. Team Southeast is going out with a bang…!!

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Team SE has been in Nashville, TN for about a week. We missed our families, but we still had a huge dinner. Tim enjoyed some succulent ham while Becky and I shared a juicy Tofurky. It was Becky’s first Thanksgiving that she’s had vegetarian choices. It felt really good to be able to cook in a real kitchen. I haven’t had this luxury since early August. I don’t think I will take that for granted anymore. It has been nice to experience each city’s restaurants though. I have indulged in many delicious vegan sweets.
Due to unexpected problems with the transmission, our van has been in the shop for the past 7 days. Unfortunately, we had to cancel a couple events. As bad as this is, at the same time, we’re really lucky to be broken down in Nashville. This house is where Tim was living when he was going to Belmont. We’re staying with 7 wonderful, welcoming college guys. We’ve had a great time.

Tim will be leaving the Vagabond tour on Dec 6th, so Becky and I are on our own for the last week. We were just looking at our schedule this morning. It is insane… We will be driving so many hours per day to get back to Santa Monica.

Dec 6th- 7 hours

Dec 7th- 7 hours

Dec 8th- 8 hours

Dec 9th- 10 hours

Dec 11th- 13 hours

Dec 12th 10 hours

It’s funny how much our schedule changed since we left TOMS HQ. We thought we had planned things pretty well, but things have come up since we’ve been on the road. It has been a wild ride.

We will be posting several more blogs soon. So keep checking back! In the mean time, look at our photo blogs and weekly videos.

Twelve days on the road, five events down and Team Southeast is on a roll! Our first event of the tour was in Baton Rouge, LA in the most unlikely of places: a bar! We had a great time with Ashton, a former TOMS intern and sold 24 pairs of shoes. We had a day off the next day so Michelle and I decided to head to New Orleans since we had never been. There are many areas that have been rebuilt and restored, but 10 yards away, there are devastated, boarded up houses with the body counts still spray painted on the doors and heaps of trash and rubbish. It was a unique experience being able to drive through a city that TOMS will soon be impacting on U.S. Shoe Drops in the coming months. At 6:00 a.m. the next morning we drove north to Ruston, LA, where we had a great event at Louisiana Tech. Our amazing high school campus rep managed to pull off getting the space at the college and get free pizza for the event, where we sold 26 pairs of shoes! We left Louisiana immediately following the event though, because we had a 13-hour drive ahead of us to Florence, AL. The University of North Alabama was great and we sold another 26 pairs of shoes. Like the entire Southeast, UNA was a beautiful campus! The coolest thing about UNA is that their mascot is a lion, so they have live lions living on campus! A little trippy, but awesome. Our next destination was Oxford, MS which was nothing short of amazing! We sold a record-breaking 126 pairs of shoes at Ole’ Miss and even managed to snag a spot on Fox News! Our campus rep did an awesome job promoting the event and getting Greek Life involved. Overall, it was a huge success!

We were sad to leave Oxford but the next day we found ourselves in the beautiful Birmingham, AL at Samford University. We were surprised at how many people were already wearing TOMS Shoes or previously knew about TOMS. We sold 10 pairs of shoes, which was quite a step down from the day before, but all the same, 10 more children will have shoes because of it. I have grown to love life on the road and the “southern hospitality” we’ve experienced in this region. I’m excited for what is to come, but I’m savoring the moments of today, knowing that our work is impacting the children of tomorrow.

Team Southeast has been on the road for one week now! We have traveled through four states so far and spent many long hours in the van but enjoying our time nonetheless! While passing through New Mexico, we came upon a unique opportunity to advertise TOMS: a bathroom at a highway gas station. That’s right, the bathroom. The gas station had posters on the wall specifically for travelers to sign! So of course, we had to leave our mark. ;D

We were lucky to stay in Austin, TX with some friends for two whole days before traveling to Louisiana for our first event on Saturday. One word to describe Austin, TX: AMAZING! Austin is now one of my new favorite cities in America. The people are awesome and the vibes are so good! We probably spent a good 5 hours of our time at Whole Foods, where they happened to be having a “Teens Turning Green” event with the TOMS vegan line featured on the display. We were able to pass out flyers and talk to some people about TOMS. It was great! I even got to do a short interview that could potentially air on youtube. I found that it really easy to talk to anyone in Austin whether it be in the grocery store or in line for stamps at the post office so we were able to keep the TOMS word spreading all the time!

I headed over to the Congress Bridge to watch the bats and was disappointed. Since it is so late in the year, they came out really, really late. Some bats flew around the bridge, but they all didn’t take off all at once like I had heard about. Bummer! To make up for the lame bats, I set out on a quest to find some good ‘ol Texas BBQ. I landed at Ruby’s, over by UT. Their brisket was incredible! That will be on my “everytime I am in Austin” list. One of my favorite places in the universe is at Mozart’s over on Lake Austin Blvd. I could sit there and relax everyday of my life.
Austin, so good. I want to live here.

Five days down. Chipotle count: 2

Today is Day 2 of the TOMS Shoes Vagabond Tour. Started out yesterday in Santa Monica and 7 hours later we were parked out in front of a friend’s house in Tucson. Since we have to get to the southeast part of the US, our first few days will be all about driving. We leave in the morning for a 13-hour drive to Austin, TX and then have our first event Friday in Baton Rouge, LA.

One day down. Chipotle count: 1

I decided to take a picture of every Chipotle I eat at on this tour. The plan is to have photos of at least 15 different locations. Hopefully I will be at more than that though!
