active and TOMS join forces for 10k in 2010

This year, Southern California retailer Active has committed to helping 10,000 children in need through their campaign 10K in 2010.   To give you a little history, Active has supported TOMS since 2007 when we were still in our infancy stage. Working out of Blake’s apartment, we heard of their passion of using retail stores as a platform to progress movements and change the way in which their customers interacted with brands. We knew they’d be a great fit with the TOMS mission. Since then, we have brought together thousands of individuals to participate in events where art and music flow effortlessly together to create change. And this year we are banding together to pursue a campaign to change the lives of 10,000 children forever.

If you are in Southern California we hope that you can join us in supporting the Active 10K in 2010 campaign and become ONE of those individuals that will change the life of ONE of those children forever. You guys are the ones who will breathe life into this movement and your voice that will spark the wave of individuals who will help us reach our goal.

lakeland style your sole

I was in Lakeland last week, speaking at Florida Southern College and also got to stop by a really inspiring Style Your Sole event. The community of Lakeland raised enough money to purchase 150 pairs of TOMS so they could host a Style Your Sole for these awesome kids that are supported by local organizations. One of the most awesome things TOMS has done from the beginning is encourage customers to customize their TOMS with paints, markers, and fabrics. TOMS fans took off with the idea and Style Your Sole has remained one of our favorite pieces at events. Whether a professional artist takes on the task of creating custom kicks or you challenge your own creativity, we’re often blown away at the outcome. Here are our top 10 custom TOMS, collected from fans and events over the past 365 days.. enjoy!

supporting project H in LA

This past Saturday, all of us girl interns went out to support Project H at the exhibition of their latest initiative, Abject Object. At the event, held at Artecnica, Project H exhibited products that were designed and constructed in skill-building workshops for once-homeless women at the Downtown Women’s Center. TOMS donated old recycled shoes to be used as fabric for the women to use. Awesome event, we were happy to support this awesome local organization!

brandon boyd, TOMS, and undefeated

Many of us at TOMS had been looking forward to Saturday night for a very long time. The Collaborative Canvas Collection, with artists Brandon Boyd and Kristin Jai Klosterman, launched at UNDEFEATED in Silverlake, CA at 7pm on Saturday September 26th. Cut from three huge canvases that Brandon and Kristin hand painted a few months ago, each of the 100 pairs of limited-edition TOMS were truly one-of-a-kind and beautiful.

As VP of Sales, Pete Ferrer reflects, “At 8:15 we had close to 200 people in line with the line wrapping around two buildings!”

The TOMS team, led by Retail Marketing Manager Garett Awad, took the entire day to set up the perfect atmosphere complete with DJ Peytonious, VeeV Vodka, Honest Tea and Nika Water — all of whom TOMS is always grateful to have on board.

The night was alive with excitement with fans anxiously waiting to purchase their numbered pair of limited-edition TOMS and snapping photos with Brandon. The dance floor was kickin’ and the crowd was a blast. It’s always so great for TOMS to share the One for One movement with a new crew, and we were stoked to see the Incubus fans and sneakerheads embrace the TOMS mission.

“You all should feel proud of what went down last night… As I always say, ‘You can’t expect different results doing the same thing!’ Last night we did the unexpected,” Pete mentioned in a note to the TOMS team.

A HUGE thank you to UNDEFEATED, Juxtapoz, Canvas Nineteen, Brandon Boyd, Kristin Jai Klosterman, Incubus, all the amazing bloggers who shared the Collaborative Canvas Collection with their audience, and the dedicated fans and supporters who came out to the event and bought TOMS! Since this project began nearly a year ago, it has flourished into something truly special. Last night proved to be a memorable milestone for TOMS, and we’re so grateful that all of you were able to share it with us.

birthday celebration

Last night, we hosted an awesome launch party at The Viceroy in Santa Monica to announce that TOMS will now be carried in the hip west-side hotel. Conveniently, its just about my birthday time, too (next week!), so together with my TOMS family, friends old and new, artists, The Viceroy crew and everyone’s awesome guests, we celebrated. We celebrated all night long and it was absolutely amazing to have such a great crowd come out to support TOMS and wish me happy birthday. Endless thanks to the TOMS team (Jill, Garett, Katie, and Megan- amazing!!) for envisioning such a stellar event and making it perfect down to all the last details, The Viceroy staff for being wonderful hosts, Karma Tequila for quenching our thirst, our artists who came out to custom paint TOMS all night long: Cheech, Man One, Theo Hetherington, and Brooke Reidt, A Fine Frenzy and DJs Oil & Vinegar for pumping the perfect music, and every single guest for hanging out, having fun, and meeting all the wonderful people I’m lucky to be surrounded by.

TOMS and hawk nelson together at nordstrom

Saturday, TOMS hosted a fun event at Nordstrom South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. In addition to the awesome sales staff helping customers find the perfect pair of TOMS, the incredible interns who gave up their Saturdays, and the skilled artists whose creativity blew us away, this event also had some special: the guys of Hawk Nelson showed up to sign autographs for their very patient (and excited!) fans. Hawk Nelson is committed to recruiting their fans to purchase TOMS with an end goal of sending 5,000 matched pairs to an orphanage they support in Haiti… and they couldn’t be more stoked about it. TOMS is proud to have them on board, had a blast with all the guys and all the customers on Saturday, and hopes the custom TOMS below inspire you to Style Your Sole!

TOMS + active + krochet kids host GIVE event in irvine

The 3rd annual GIVE event this past weekend at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine, CA was beyond a success. TOMS teamed up with Cali-based action sports retailer Active and up-and-coming non-profit Krochet Kids to create an energetic atmosphere, which featured a slew diverse live music, live murals, and 13 artists custom painting TOMS for customers. “We had over 1,500 people there!” said Retail Marketing Manager Garret Awad. “This event was by far the biggest event we have done with Active.”

Active is always amazing at pulling together memorable events, and they’re never shy to execute original ideas and creative setups.

TOMS pop up store #2: east coast!

The Hamptons have long been a summer destination spot, a getaway for those living in the concrete jungle and a resource of instant relaxation. This summer, TOMS is movin’ in, too. With the success of the west coast pop up store this past fall, TOMS has decided to bring the laid-back vibe of SoCal to the north east. A pop up is defined as a temporary brick and mortar store that pops up for a short period of time to offer the customer a unique and fun shopping experience. The TOMS pop up in the Hamptons will live at trendy hotel Sole East (90 Second House Rd. Montauk, NY) and will be open until Labor Day, September 7th.

If the east coast can bring the same energy as the west coast did, this pop up store is sure to be a destination for some epic events, memorable moments, and the perfect platform to share the TOMS story.

This weekend, TOMS will be hosting a weekend-long Style Your Sole event, so come armed with your desire to unleash your creativity and join the One for One movement!

Who doesn’t love a chill summer evening, filled with good times, good friends, and awesome hand painted TOMS? TOMS retailer Akira hosted a killer event last week that brought in a great crowd and produced some really creative shoes- check the photos out below. Using spray paint, stencils, acrylic paints, and markers on solid colored TOMS, you can achieve the same effect! Thanks to the team at Akira for sharing the One for One movement with Chicago!
