My name is Hajime and I am a part of the International Sales Team at TOMS. On our most recent TOMS Canada tour we were fortunate enough to meet Jared Sullivan from lululemon in the Newmarket, Ontario store. Jared is an incredibly passionate person, has a love for TOMS Shoes, and shared with us the ethos of lululemon: “To elevate the world from a place of mediocrity to a place of greatness”. The more we got to learn about Jared and the philosophy behind luluemon, the more we realized how we are like-minded companies working towards making the world a better place.

In order to celebrate this drive to “elevate the world”, lululemon will be hosting a TOMS Style Your Sole event this Saturday Jan 23 from 7-9PM at the lululemon store in Newmarket, ON. Come by to custom design your own pair of TOMS or to collaborate with others to create a unique pair!

One of the most awesome things TOMS has done from the beginning is encourage customers to customize their TOMS with paints, markers, and fabrics. TOMS fans took off with the idea and Style Your Sole has remained one of our favorite pieces at events. Whether a professional artist takes on the task of creating custom kicks or you challenge your own creativity, we’re often blown away at the outcome. brandon boyd, TOMS, and undefeated

Many of us at TOMS had been looking forward to Saturday night for a very long time. The Collaborative Canvas Collection, with artists Brandon Boyd and Kristin Jai Klosterman, launched at UNDEFEATED in Silverlake, CA at 7pm on Saturday September 26th. Cut from three huge canvases that Brandon and Kristin hand painted a few months ago, each of the 100 pairs of limited-edition TOMS were truly one-of-a-kind and beautiful.

As VP of Sales, Pete Ferrer reflects, “At 8:15 we had close to 200 people in line with the line wrapping around two buildings!”

The TOMS team, led by Retail Marketing Manager Garett Awad, took the entire day to set up the perfect atmosphere complete with DJ Peytonious, VeeV Vodka, Honest Tea and Nika Water — all of whom TOMS is always grateful to have on board.

The night was alive with excitement with fans anxiously waiting to purchase their numbered pair of limited-edition TOMS and snapping photos with Brandon. The dance floor was kickin’ and the crowd was a blast. It’s always so great for TOMS to share the One for One movement with a new crew, and we were stoked to see the Incubus fans and sneakerheads embrace the TOMS mission.

“You all should feel proud of what went down last night… As I always say, ‘You can’t expect different results doing the same thing!’ Last night we did the unexpected,” Pete mentioned in a note to the TOMS team.

A HUGE thank you to UNDEFEATED, Juxtapoz, Canvas Nineteen, Brandon Boyd, Kristin Jai Klosterman, Incubus, all the amazing bloggers who shared the Collaborative Canvas Collection with their audience, and the dedicated fans and supporters who came out to the event and bought TOMS! Since this project began nearly a year ago, it has flourished into something truly special. Last night proved to be a memorable milestone for TOMS, and we’re so grateful that all of you were able to share it with us.

a little more about brandon boyd

This Saturday is the big launch event for the Collaborative Canvas Collection we’ve been teasing for weeks. Through the process we’ve learned a lot about Brandon Boyd: he uses the word “neat-o”, he’s an Aquarius, and most importantly, he is an amazing artist. More 411 about the man himself below.

And if you’re in LA, or anywhere near LA, you should probably definitely need to be at the UNDEFEATED Silverlake location on Saturday to see Brandon and Kristin’s work in person. It’s gonna be a super celebration of art and One for One… and you surely won’t want to miss out.

TOMS: How long have you been painting for?
BRANDON BOYD: I have been drawing since I can recall and painting for the past 10 or 12 years.

TOMS: Where does your passion for art and music stem from?
BB: I remember being surrounded by art and music as a child, so I have to assume that some of my hard wiring is a result of a fortunate environment. That being said, my drive and impulse to make things out of nothing is almost preternatural. I NEED to make music and art. If I deny the impulse, I get anxious and am filled with an unshakable feeling that I am missing something. So, I have been doing my best to accommodate this ‘live in guest’ my entire life. It still feels vital, magical and novel. So I have reserved the nicest couch in my house for it and is constantly leaving a mess in my living room.

TOMS: What excites you most about this collaboration with TOMS?
BB: What excites me most about this project with TOMS is the opportunity to make wearable art. That and the notion that the canvas’ I labored over for four days were to be destroyed systematically by being hacked into hundreds of pieces and turned into things that would eventually smell like cheese popcorn. Exciting! Art that is alive!!

TOMS: How do you know Kristin Jai Klosterman and why did you choose to work together?
BB: Kristin is my neighbor and fellow devotee of the Church of ‘DoWhatEverIGottaDoToMakeArtInsteadOfGettingARealJob’. They are very welcoming, warm and jovial. But be warned, it looks and smells a lot like a cult.

holiday matinee custom TOMS

Last month, good blogger friend Dave Brown invited Friends of TOMS to participate in his 10 year anniversary event for the Holiday Matinee blog. In addition to collecting a percentage of the profits from the night to benefit Friends of TOMS, we also got to meet some amazing people and share an awesome evening. An update from Dave below on the shoes some local artists painted for the event.

Hey TOMS crew,
We just finished hanging the artist series of TOMS Shoes in our office. 11 local artists each designed a pair specifically for our 10 Year Anniversary party that benefited Friends of TOMS. You’ll have to come back to San Diego and check out the exhibit in person. The detail on a lot of the shoes are absolutely incredible!

dave matthews band takes TOMS on tour

This spring, Dave Matthews Band joined the TOMS Vagabonds as the official soundtrack of the 2nd Vagabond tour. Together they inspired compassion in action on campuses nation-wide!

Dave Matthews Band and TOMS are excited to now release two styles of Vegan TOMS with custom artwork by Dave Matthews, one style for men and one for women. The shoes are available on the Dave Matthews Band online store, and for purchase at all stops on the Dave Matthews Band summer tour, now through October 3rd, ending at the Austin City Limits music festival in Austin, TX.

Blake Mycoskie, TOMS founder and Chief Shoe Giver, said, “This gives us a great opportunity to build a stronger connection with TOMS supporters and introduce TOMS and our One for One movement to the DMB fan base.”

TOMS + active + krochet kids host GIVE event in irvine

The 3rd annual GIVE event this past weekend at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine, CA was beyond a success. TOMS teamed up with Cali-based action sports retailer Active and up-and-coming non-profit Krochet Kids to create an energetic atmosphere, which featured a slew diverse live music, live murals, and 13 artists custom painting TOMS for customers. “We had over 1,500 people there!” said Retail Marketing Manager Garret Awad. “This event was by far the biggest event we have done with Active.”

Active is always amazing at pulling together memorable events, and they’re never shy to execute original ideas and creative setups.

vintage: a celebration of art + surf

This past weekend, TOMS teamed up with Laguna Beach retailer Thalia Surf Shop for a killer event. Local musicians The Pawnshop Kings set up stage in the connecting Surf Gallery, and set the mood with their laid back California style. The Thalia team revved up the Coleman camper stove, grilling up juicy hot dogs for the crowd, and artists Theo Hetherington, Meredith Ambruso, and Jesse Miller employed their creativity to produce some really awesome hand-painted TOMS for customers. To cap off the night, Thalia screened vintage surf film from surf director Spyder Willis (Chasing the Lotus, Uluwatu, and Downhill Motion).

Thanks to Thalia providing the perfect set up for an amazing event, the artists for have loads more creativity than we do, and to all who came out, bought shoes, and enjoyed the evening with us!
