When Fall hits, you know its time for one of the premier festivals in the country: Austin City Limits. Texas is filled TOMS supporters, especially when ACL comes around. Being able to have a booth where we can interact over 80,000 people every day is just an amazing opportunity. Some are new, as we excitedly share the One for One movement and help outfit them in their first pair of TOMS, and some festival-goers return year after year to the TOMS booth wearing their TOMS just to say hello. This year, we have a sales rep, a VP of sales, a couple interns, a past-Vagabond, and UT campus reps out to man the booth in our 3rd year selling at the festival. TOMS will have women’s black canvas, red canvas, ash canvas, white canvas, and burlap styles; and men’s black canvas, ask canvas, black burlap, and beige Stitchout styles available- get ‘em while they last (or head over to TOMSshoes.com if your style sells out). ACL provides the perfect outlet to associate TOMS with great music and interact awesome people. If you make it out, drop by the TOMS booth, open all 3 days 11:00am – 10:00pm and say hi!

And if you’re on Twitter, send twitpics when you spot people wearing TOMS (@TOMSshoes) so the rest of us here at HQ can be envious of how much fun you all are having.

At Pluckers enjoying some wings with the Invisible Children volunteers (aka my friends from San Antonio)

Oh, my! What a ride it has been so far for the Midwest/TX team! We started out with out first event in Austin at the Austin Loves Africa Fest. I was excited to see that some of the volunteers for Invisible Children happened to be some of my friends from San Antonio. Even better, a lot of the people who came out were sporting TOMS! The fest was a two part event. First, at Ruta Maya coffee house then later that night at Emo’ s. It was nice to see so many young people come out and show their support! We also had a moment to share a slice of chocolate fudge pie and try some Dr. Pepper flavored wings with the IC volunteers at Pluckers. The wings were definitely a first for us.

I have to say I fell in love with our UT Pan American Rep Katie from the moment we walked in to her beautiful home! Let’s talk about how her mom fed us 14oz steaks with green beans and potatoes after a long drive to Mission, TX. lol umm…pretty much amazing everyone..no joke! Tia and I were on cloud nine. It didn’t even end there, dessert was absolutely fabulous. Props to all the awesome shoes at our first official SYS party. I particularly loved the ones below that Katie’s roommate Angela designed. The strawberries are the cutest touch!

Angela’s amazing TOMS! It’s all LOVE!

We look forward to seeing the cool shoes that our TOMS lovers share with us on this journey that we are blessed to be a part of. I think the best part for me is introducing a person to TOMS and seeing their canvas shoes become something personal. Much love from Texas!

Its always exciting to spend time with President Clinton, but this past weekend at the second annual CGI U was extra special. The energy of the thousands of students that attended was unreal, and they were just as inspiring to me as TOMS and the One for One business model is to them. Here’s a link (and a time log- the entire piece is 90 minutes long) to the Opening Plenary, where I had the opportunity to speak in front of 1,300+ of the best students from around the world. Some photos below, too.

40:12 – Pres Clinton introduces me
55:25 – Pres Clinton asks me, “Why shoes? Why a business, not a charity?”
80:10 – Pres Clinton asks us, “Where do you want to be in 5 years?”

For those of you who weren’t able to make it to Austin this past weekend, I challenge you to match the passion and determination that the students who attended represent. TOMS has campus rep programs that empower students to further the One for One mission on their own campuses, or even here at our HQ in LA: www.TOMSshoes.com/jointheteam.

The past few weeks have been amazing: Having the opportunity to speak in front of the most influential people in the business world at the TED conference and being inspired by their knowledge, and then speaking in front of the most passionate students in the world and being inspired by their energy, leaves me absolutely humbled.

Today I’m headed back to Texas. It won’t be for a relaxing weekend at home with my parents, or to catch up with old friends. This weekend will be fast-paced and exciting: I’m speaking at CGI U in Austin. TOMS is a proud member of the Clinton Global Initiative and pledged to give 100,000 pairs of shoes to Haiti at this past fall’s CGI conference in NYC. CGI U began in 2007 as a means for students, national youth organizations, and university officials to discuss solutions to pressing global issues. Friday I’ll be on a panel with good friend President Bill Clinton, President of Dell Global Public, Paul Bell, Graduate Student in Biomedical Engineering, Mambidzeni Madzivire, and actress Natalie Portman discussing how students and campuses can take action in making a difference. The weekend then continues with amazing discussions and presentations about developing sustainable food systems, how to be innovative and resourceful in difficult economic times, working sessions on global health, energy and climate change, education, and more. The individuals who will be presenting are incredibly intelligent people who really care about guiding our youth, and I’m looking forward to being a part of this year’s conference. After this weekend, its back to LA to the TOMS HQ.
