TOMS pop up store #2: east coast!

July 2nd, 2009 by admin

The Hamptons have long been a summer destination spot, a getaway for those living in the concrete jungle and a resource of instant relaxation. This summer, TOMS is movin’ in, too. With the success of the west coast pop up store this past fall, TOMS has decided to bring the laid-back vibe of SoCal to the north east. A pop up is defined as a temporary brick and mortar store that pops up for a short period of time to offer the customer a unique and fun shopping experience. The TOMS pop up in the Hamptons will live at trendy hotel Sole East (90 Second House Rd. Montauk, NY) and will be open until Labor Day, September 7th.

If the east coast can bring the same energy as the west coast did, this pop up store is sure to be a destination for some epic events, memorable moments, and the perfect platform to share the TOMS story.

This weekend, TOMS will be hosting a weekend-long Style Your Sole event, so come armed with your desire to unleash your creativity and join the One for One movement!

from texas, to oklahoma, to las vegas and more

June 29th, 2009 by admin

We entitled this trip CARMTOALT.  It stands for Cody and Ross’ Motorcycle Trip of a LifeTime.  From Oklahoma City Cody and I headed west.  We had a tentative plan with not all the details filled in.  We planned to shoot from the hip, stay with friends, family and family of friends we had not met, and camp when needed.  Loaded down with only the bare necessities, we embarked on a trip so insightful and surreal that we could not have possibly imagined the impact this journey would have on our lives.

I had been a member of the ‘TOMS club’ for 8 months, so much so that for the forty days of Lent I didn’t wear any other shoes, just TOMS, even the one day it snowed.  So it naturally seemed right to wear them on the trip.  Cody decide to take his pair and I had the tough decision which one of mine to take.  I find that my gray TOMS are suitable in any situation, being so versatile and comfortable is the reason I brought them; they look classy and are easy to pack.  After three days of riding I had a nice tan line on the top of my foot, which has not faded.  Having the TOMS flag with us, we knew that there would be great photos opportunities on this cross country adventure.  Also, showing the pictures would be a good opportunity to explain the ‘One for One’ mission of TOMS to anyone who didn’t know.

Most trips that people take are about the destination, what will happen when we get there.  This was about the journey, what will happen each day. We discovered the western half of our country, riding across almost every landscape America has to offer, and more importantly discovering ourselves. This trip was something that will never be forgotten, and although our motorcycle journey has come to a close, the things we have learned and experiences shared will live on as we travel this road we call life.

TOMS: How did you first hear of TOMS?
LUCID: I first heard about TOMS from a sales rep. I was actually looking for another particular brand of shoes and found the rep for them. It turned out that brand was not available in my area as another store already carried them. The sales rep suggested TOMS instead. The universe was conspiring in my favour that day!

T: What are your favorite TOMS you currently carry?
L: Personally, I wear the Stitchouts most often!  Its the Wrap Boot that I think is pretty genius though…but they don’t make them in my size!

T: You recently went on a shoe drop.  Tell us a little about your experience and how it affected you?
L: Wow…gotta a few hours? In December, I went on a shoe drop in Misiones in Argentina near the Iguazu Falls. I met with 12 amazing people from the US, Canada and Australia.  We travelled to different schools in that area and distributed shoes to kids. We spent about an hour or more fitting individual kids with shoes. Then afterwards, we would have free time with our new friends playing, kicking a soccer ball around and for the most part hamming it up. There was a bit of a language barrier (especially for me) but that didn’t seem to matter as laughing is pretty universal. Seeing first hand the different conditions that other people live in was very humbling. The things that we take for granted every day became very apparent. The “problems” that I perceived myself to have everyday seemed petty compared to what some of the people I met have to deal with. Even more humbling was how happy these people were living in what we in North America would consider poverty. This further instilled my belief that money, though a provider of comfort and luxury, is not the source of happiness!

T: What was the inspiration behind your window display?
L: Another brand I carry, Sitka, provided a “wallpaper” that is west coast forest scene. It was actually from a photo taken by one of Sitka’s owners, Andrew Paine.  In the photo of the display you can see it in the background. The display window extends around to the left and the theme continues with Sitka clothing on bust forms mounted on larger log rounds.  I feel very fortunate to live in a naturally beautiful portion of the planet. This display is a reflection of that appreciation and respect that I have for Mother Nature. I must admit, cutting a tree out of the woods for the display seems to be a bit contradictory though.

T: Anything else our readers should know about Lucid?
L: Lucid is not unlike any independently owned clothing store in any other town. Maybe that’s a board store, maybe a more fashion boutique, perhaps its a retailer of eco friendly products (we are little bit of each of those). The goal with these businesses is to offer something different and unique to the people in that particular area. Also, to support the local culture, be it surfing, skating, arts, music or whatever the local scene is.  Support your friendly neighbour store…we appreciate it! If you’d like to keep up with all things Lucid, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, or our website.

you’re welcome

June 25th, 2009 by bmycoskie

Isn’t this baby adorable? A friend of mine from the Tribeca Film Festival sent this to me, and I had to share. Last spring, For Tomorrow, the TOMS story, was featured along with other short films at Tribeca. We were so honored when the documentary was accepted, and it was an amazing experience every step of the way. So cool to see our friends at Tribeca supporting the One for One movement!

Check out the TOMS YouTube Channel to see the trailer for the documentary along with other great videos from TOMS.

Akira is proud to bring One for One to the windy city, making it possible for locals in Chicago to try on and pick up a stellar new pair of TOMS. And because they’re awesome, they will be hosting a killer event this June! Read on to hear the details and get to know our friends at Akira.

How long have you been carrying TOMS?
We have been carrying TOMS for a little over a year.

Why does your store carry TOMS?

We carry TOMS because we love the story behind the company and what they stand for. They offer a product that is comfortable, durable and super-cute! You feel good purchasing them and wearing them!

What shoe has been your best seller?

Our best sellers are the striped/rope bottoms in red and yellow. They’re perfect for summer. Also, everybody loves the basic colors like black and gray.

What is your (personal) favorite TOMS style?
My personal favorite TOMS shoe are the glitter ones. (…can’t wait to get them in again soon!)

Do you get many customers who recognize the shoes?
Tons of people recognize the TOMS shoes, especially since the commercials aired. People love that they are for a good cause.

What makes your store special, why should people come visit?

AKIRA is THE place in Chicago to buy footwear (and pretty much the only one that carries TOMS)!!! We have a wide range of prices and shoes, and a phenomenal, energetic staff. Our customer service and loyalty we build with our clients is what sets us apart from any old shoe store. We love shoes, and our customers are always pleased!

Tell us about the event you have coming up…

So here are the details of our TOMS party. Its June 25th from 4-9pm at the AKIRA Women’s Footwear on 1849 W. North Avenue. Local Chicago artist SARO will be there to paint the shoes. He has a cool graffiti-inspired style and will be using airbrush and stencils! Clients will also be able to paint their own purchased TOMS if they choose as well. It will be a painting party! Release your inner artist:) We’ll have refreshments by Ultimat vodka and gift bags by LUSH Handmade Cosmetics with TOMS purchase! Art supplies were donated by Utrecht on Michigan Avenue and Genesis Art Supplies on Western.

enter to win a trip of a lifetime: TOMS + element

June 19th, 2009 by admin

This past February, TOMS announced an exciting collaboration with Element Skateboards. In addition to 5 limited edition TOMS + Element shoes, the two companies teamed up to create a One for One skateboard. With every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. As part of the One for One collaboration, with every skateboard purchased, Element will give a skateboard to a child in need in Durban, South Africa.

The collaboration was a stellar success. The shoes and the boards sold like hotcakes, and now its time for the collaboration to come full circle.

This October, TOMS, Element, and volunteers will head out to Durban to deliver matched pairs of TOMS shoes and skateboards… and we want YOU to be part of the adventure.

Write a 1,000 word essay or record a 3-minute video telling us why you want to be part of the TOMS + Element South Africa Shoe + Board Drop this October. TWO winners will be chosen this August!

Visit Element to learn more and submit your application.

united we serve

June 18th, 2009 by bmycoskie

Yesterday I was honored to participate in something really inspiring. The White House just launched serve.gov, a place for people to find out about service projects in their communities and share stories about projects they’re already working on, and TOMS was part of the launch discussion. I can see this outlet being an awesome way for TOMS to share info about US Shoe Drops, and recruit volunteers in the future. Obama formally announced the United We Serve initiative yesterday, rallying Americans to help “lay a new foundation for growth by engaging in meaningful community service.” Its great to know the administration recognizes TOMS as an agent for change, and we’re excited to see Americans across the country have an accessible way to impact their communities.

Check out serve.gov today and get involved. Ask your entire communities involved. Together we are making this world a better place!
